Growing up, my favorite place to be during the summertime was the pool! I lived in a small apartment complex with my mom and our apartment was directly facing the community pool. So I was able to go whenever I wanted because she was able to see me from her window. There was one time I remember that I was going to get ready to go to the pool because our AC was not working. In fact, everyone’s AC was not working. The whole apartment complex was experiencing some sort of black out of their HVAC system. The front office management said that it would take a week to repair everyone’s AC system. They had to send out a whole team of HVAC technicians to service the whole complex in that short amount of time. So the kids in my neighborhood and I all had a blast at the pool the entire week. It was packed! The day came for the technician to service my apartment. He came and took about two hours to find out what was wrong and then said that our whole building would be restored to maximum AC potential! Let me tell you how good it felt to have AC in our small apartment again. The pool was a nice cool down, but nothing best the refreshing feeling of cool, crisp air running around you. So from then on, I continued my usual pool getaways but was forever grateful for the improvements the management team made to the AC system. Now the pool would not be so crowded on regular summer days.
The older I get, the more stuff I deal with. I feel like such a loser at times. Driving at night is now something I have to really concentrate on. A day after a long bike ride, I feel like someone is practicing some sort of weird Haitian voodoo on the entirety of my musculature. Don’t get me started about what I can and can’t eat now. I mean what the hell? Now, the latest thing is allergies. Throughout my time, I have suffered from a bit of hay fever now and again. But, that’s it. Now the air quality in my own home is trying to snuff me. The house is sealed up tight to maximize the HVAC efficiency. The downside of that is the air gets recycled. The air quality in my house is stale and apparently full of allergens. I purchased a very fancy and expensive air filter to try and trap the allergens. This made a bit of a difference but not enough. I asked the HVAC business I deal with for advice on how to solve this problem. They suggested adding a whole house air purifier. I was game. The HVAC tech came over and attached this rather small unit to the inside air handler. The air purifier uses the UV spectrum to kill just about every air contaminant known to man. I was fairly stoked to see how it would turn out. It took less than half the day to see a dramatic difference. Suddenly, my air was fresher and I could actually breathe through my nose. It was bliss. I should have called the HVAC guys long ago because this air purifier worked wonders.
Winter can be brutal up here in the Northland. Way up here, winter is just no joke. If you aren’t prepared, it will simply kick your butt. As soon as I turn off the air conditioning at the end of summer, I call the HVAC guy to come out and tune up the furnace. I do not fool around because I want that furnace on point when the temps drop precipitously. And, that’s how it happens. It gets cooler through the fall and then WHAM, the next thing you know it’s snowing. And then, that whole routine starts up again. I go out and cover up the HVAC condenser unit to be sure the A/C is protected from the snow and ice. This is a simple detail many of my neighbors just skip. But, it is actually quite important to cover the outside A/C component through the winter. This keeps ice and snow from sitting directly on fan blades. It also mitigates all the freezing and thawing on important parts. I have even had a large icicle fall on the condenser which could have penetrated the grill had the cover not stopped it. I add this component to the list as I do my snow patrol. While I’m out clearing away snow and ice from the driveway and sidewalks, I zip around the house. It’s important not to allow accumulated snow and ice to just lay on the compressor cabinet. It’s equally important to be sure that when Spring comes around, the A/C is good to go.
I love to explore and travel as often as possible. I travel locally and internationally whenever I have some time off from work. If I don’t have time for long international trips, I try to take local trips really often. Last year, I went to a city four hours away with my best friends. We decided to take a girls’ trip and explore a new city. It was a beautiful city with some amazing, delicious food. However, our hotel rooms were horrible. We payed a lot of money for our rooms, so we expected quality in return. Instead, we got hotel rooms without heating systems. It was the middle of the winter season, so it was absolutely freezing outside. It was a very snowy weekend, so we needed the heating system to be comfortable. Instead, the heating systems refused to even turn on. We called the hotel front desk to handle the situation. We thought that they would handle the situation immediately, but we were very wrong. We had to call several times for them to even answer the phone. When they finally answered the phone, they told us that they did not have anyone on staff to handle the situation and that we would have to put up with the lack of heat until the next day. To our surprise, no one came by the following day to fix the heating system. It was a very cold weekend without heat. We suffered through, but we tried to push through it so that we could enjoy the city. Despite the lack of heat, we still enjoyed the trip.
My mother is a sucker for a good deal. She loves to save money wherever possible. She will not make any purchases or any home improvements unless she has a coupon. It is can be quite annoying, but she has saved the family a lot of money. She has had great luck doing this until a few months ago. She received a flyer in the mail that was advertising a new HVAC company. This company was offering fifty percent off all heating and cooling updates. My mom decided that this was a sign and it was finally time to do a total heating and cooling replacement. My dad was really eager to replace our heating and cooling system, so he jumped on board right away. My mom called the company and they came over to the house immediately to provide a quote. Their prices were so cheap that my parents were thrilled and signed the paperwork immediately. They regretted this decision several weeks later. The workers showed up the next day and started their work on the house. Several days later, they stopped showing up. It was the middle of the HVAC job, and we were without heating and cooling for weeks. Sometimes, they showed up and other times, they did not show up. Eventually, my parents gave up on calling the company because they didn’t seem to care. We ended up calling a different company to complete the job. We lost a lot of money, but we eventually fixed the heating and cooling. That was the most important part.
Here in the mountains, we are finally seeing the beginning of fall. It isn’t hot outside, and the nights are getting cool. I’ve always loved the fall season. The leaves turn bright orange and I smell smoke from nearby fireplaces. I also enjoy chopping wood into fireplace-size logs, and not using the air conditioner. In fact, I have opened the windows the last few days now, but I close them up for the evenings. It isn’t so cold yet where I need to turn on the heat. All I need is an extra blanket. However, it is time for my annual furnace tune-up. In these mountains, I never want to experience a furnace breakdown. I’d rather have the HVAC company come out and check out my furnace before I start using it again. Afterall, my furnace has not been in use for over 6 months now. So I’ll have the HVAC professional check it out and order any parts that might be needed now before the real cold weather comes. We have the fireplace, extra portable heaters and lots of blankets, but having a working furnace is an absolute must in our neck of the woods. So I’ll schedule a furnace tune-up for next week, since I could be turning on that furnace next month. Otherwise, I could be forced to chop a lot more wood for the fireplace than what was originally planned for. In fact, I doubt if my wood shed could hold enough wood to keep the fireplace burning all day and all night. So I’d be better off with a well-working furnace, instead of an overworked fireplace.
My childhood loft is a single of our warmest memories, however i often ran around the backyard with our pet & friends, then my only complaint was the inconvenience of cooling down. One day, they weary of our complaining & spoke to our buddy who is an Heating & A/C Technician… He checked our loft & air conditioning unit. He found that there was an obstruction in the ductwork. The air conditioning worked correctly, however our room did not earn much cool air, and living in the heat of the Deep South made it more unbearable. To our delight, our buddy was available to service the ductwork that weekend. He did not charge us so our parents agreed to the service. The first night after the repair felt appreciate pure bliss. Not a single drop of sweat touched our head that night. The next day, I mowed our neighbor’s yard out of gratitude. My parents felt terrible once they knew the truth. They promised to not dismiss myself and others again.

It’s finally almost there, and then I can finally relax for a while. We’re so close to having at least one of our rooms completed at this new house that we recently moved into, and I am so excited. You see, moving was a huge ordeal overall, and it became a hugely stressful obstacle course that spread out over several months somehow. As such, just getting out stuff into this house felt like a huge accomplishment when it was finally complete. Now, I’m actually going through and trying to figure out a story for each and every room. So far, the sunroom is the closest to being a complete hang space. It’s the most wonderful room of the house, hands down, thanks to all the extra fresh air and free lighting out there. If you want some extra air or desire to catch a breeze, you can sometimes pop open a window and trap a cool air flow as it passes by. Other times, however, you’re SOL. There is often no cool breeze to direct into the room at all, since we live in the deep south where the air is thick, stagnant, and hot. That’s why the only renovation that still needs to be made to the sunroom is the addition of a simple overhead ceiling fan. You see, the room has some AC thanks to its connection to the central cooling system, but there’s no way to circulate the cool air once inside the room. If we could supply a gentle breeze and some air flow to the tiny indoor space, it would be the most relaxing and comfortable room I could dream of. I’m so glad one room of this house is almost ready to use… next we just need to move our beds inside the house.
